Ongoing Internship Opportunities

  • Zintellect lists government funded opportunities at colleges and businesses.
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has summer opportunities. NASA has summer and year-long internships at locations around the country including Fairmont WV and Greenbelt MD near DC as well as working remotely. Intern.NASA.gov
  • The National Science Foundation (NSF) Summer Scholars funds campus programs and company programs that offer semester and summer internships in the sciences. 
  • The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a Summer Internship Program (SIP) for high school and college students. Interns work in labs and present their science posters at the end of the summer. Note the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has a large campus at Ft. Detrick, Frederick MD.
  • US Air Force accepts STEM students to study under USAF scientists at one of three locations under the Repperger Research Intern Program. Application deadline mid-February.
  • Pathways -(Under usajobs.gov search “student intern” and location “West Virginia”.) Pathways also hires recent grads; here is May 2020 Pathways listing for IT jobs at various IRS facilities including Kearneysville and Martinsburg WV. Other sites that list these openings include Google and Handshake.
  • The US Capitol Police (USCP) post their own job descriptions, even though the applications are also on USAJOBS.
  • Peace Corps volunteers help people in other nations. Peace Corps also trains students for volunteer internships in the USA. Interns work in data analytics, as ambassadors (recruiters), or other positions. New opportunities open every year. Sign up for email alerts so you’ll know when to apply.
  • JLG makes vehicles for construction sites. JLG has R&D facilities in Hagerstown MD. See the careers and internships pages at the parent company, OshKosh Truck. JLG has paid internships in mathematics, real-time data analytics, autonomous vehicle algorithms, microcontrollers, embedded systems, controller networks,  virtual reality simulations, and manufacturing.
  • Volvo Group has truck building factories in Hagerstown MD. Volvo has several programs for engineering students: summer jobs, internships, and thesis projects. Volvo Group does not own Volvo Cars. Fall 2020 co-op in mechanical or systems engineering. Fall 2020 co-op in control systems engineering. Fall 2020 co-op in electrical engineering.
  • US Army Corp of Engineers - is always hiring interns pursuing careers in engineering, architecture, or an associated field.
  • General Dynamics Mission Systems takes interns all over the US. Click on Careers and search for “intern” and USA.
  • JP Morgan employs 50K software engineers! See SE internships and full time jobs.
  • Sparksoft has offices in Fairmont WV, Herndon VA, and Columbia MD. Spaksoft hires interns for junior computer and data positions. Search careers.
  • UPchieve organizes volunteer college students to become online part-time tutors for low-income high school math students. UPchieve also has job openings e.g. software engineer.
  • Microsoft has internships for high school, college, and graduate students.

  • Brethren Mutual Insurance Company in Hagerstown MD has an internship for math students. See careers.
